Periyar Tiger Reserve (PTR) is tropically diverse vegetation with variety of flora and fauna. It is the oldest and largest protected area in Kerala. Periyar Tiger Reserve was initially constituted as a Game Sanctuary in 1934 in the name Nellikampetty Game Sanctuary. Later it evolved as Periyar wildlife Sanctuary in 1950 and eventually as Periyar Tiger Reserve in 1978. After the implementation of India Eco Development Project from 1996 to 2004, PTR became a role model for participatory conservation.
Periyar Tiger Reserve is one of the richest evergreen forests in Western Ghats with extensive biodiverse flora and fauna. The tribal communities of Periyar Tiger Reserve include Mannas, Paliyans, Uralis, Ulladans, Malampandarams and Malarayans. 58 villages in the periphery of Periyar Tiger Reserve with 2.25 lakhs of tribal villagers live within 2km radius of the forest. These communities are partially or fully dependent on these forests. To empower these communities various ecodevelopment activities were launched in mid 1990′s.
