
We have heard responsible tourism but being a responsible tourist is something new. How can we be one is the question and being so how can help ourselves and the touch point in tourism business. This Blog intends to share some key elements which are known but often forgotten. We have tried to compile a small guide on this subject.
As tourism takes the upward graph across the board there is a lot that we as a tourist can do to show our responsibility. By taking care of ourselves and basic essentials we can contribute towards being a responsible tourist.
Following are the tips which are simple to follow and will contribute a lot to the success of your holiday.
1. Prepare a file or envelope with your finalized tour programme, travel tickets and hotel vouchers.
2. Use government approved tour operators and hotels with good reviews.
3. Organize your clothing as per the destination climate.
4. Check the carrying capacity of your airline and taxi before you pack your bags.
5. Carry just enough cash required and debit cards and credit cards as much as possible.
6. If you are traveling to another country apply for VISA well in advance.
7. Ensure you meet the right representative on arrival.
8. Check credentials before boarding a taxi and ensure it’s meant for you.
9. Spend time and cross check your itinerary with your guide or driver before proceeding.
10. Keep a stock of snacks and water handy during long drives.
11. Keep all your belongings in locker or suitcase or handbag.
12. Do take a toilet visit before you leave for your next destination.
13. Deposit the hotel room key at the reception when you are going out or keep it in your bag.
14. Ensure that the room door is locked when you are inside your room.
15. Avoid interaction with strangers as much as possible.
16. Do not travel late night without your guide or driver.
17. Do not throw garbage onto the road.
18. Learn to speak a bit of the local language.
19. Use water optimally; do not waste water, especially in the shower.
20. Use hotel linen and towels judiciously.
21. Do not waste food if you are taking a buffet.
22. Do not speak loudly in crowded places.
23. Do not occupy chairs in restaurants, coffee shops for long.
24. Keep a constant eye on young kids all the time.
25. Abide by the house rules in all hotels and be aware of the local laws.
26. Ask for permission before taking photographs of people.
27. Eat what you are comfortable with, else request the hotel what you want.
28. Care for infants and interact with hotel at each location for your baby’s food.
29. Carry your medicines at all times.
30. If you have any special request, do place it in advance.
31. If you are giving your clothes to the laundry do check and confirm when you would get it back.
32. Eat a heavy breakfast as you would be out during the day and your body needs energy.
33. Eat light at dinner for a sound sleep.
34. Ask as many questions as you have to clear any ambiguity vis-à-vis travel.
35. Wear appropriate clothing as the destination demands.
36. Read the local news to be updated of local happenings.
37. Interact with your hotel/ tour operators for information.
38. Change money with authorized money changers only.
39. Reconfirm your travel schedule before arrival and departure.
40. Express your dissatisfaction if the service is inadequate.
41. Check all bills presented for accuracy before signing.
42. Leave a feedback on each service ideally at respective locations.
43. Keep away from shop keepers and guide offering freebies.
44. If you buy anything check, check and check before you pay.
45. Be aware of the hotels meal timings and other services on arrival.
46. Charge your mobile phone, tablets, PC or other devices during the night.
47. In case you need a late checkout do speak to the hotel to avoid any unwanted billing.
48. Keep emergency contact numbers written down on a neat piece of paper in your wallet.
49. Check your belongings when you leave each hotel/ restaurant/ taxi etc.
50. Take your chauffeur into confidence as he is the closest best guide you can have.
UNWTO (United Nations World Tourism Organization) released a new handbook “Travel. Enjoy. Respect” as part of it global public awareness program which throws insight into how to be a responsible tourist. It states #TravelEnjoyRespect and highligthgs 5 key points as under
